Solar photovoltaics (PV) are more popular than ever. The amount of rooftop PV systems increased by 29% in 2024 compared to 2023. Particularly as end users look to reduce their electricity bills. Moreover, when combined with a battery, consumers can get closer to self-sufficiency.

Most energy providers require a Microgeneration Scheme Certified (MCS) installation before allowing customers to access the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG). However, the exception to this rule is Octopus Energy.

Installers can fit solar panels under MCS umbrella schemes. Under these schemes, an MCS-certified organisation deals with the paperwork and commissioning for the installer.

This course is recognised by MCS, so, we can offer guidance on obtaining MCS certification.

To become a certified Solar PV installer in the UK, individuals typically need to follow these steps:

  1. Already be working in the electrical sector, as an electrician/electrical technician. Solar PV training is for experienced electrical operatives. It means candidates must complete the 18th Edition Wiring regulations and have relevant Level 3 electrical qualifications/experience.

  2. Enrol on a reputable training programme. GTEC’s Solar PV course is accredited by LCL Awards, the UK’s leading renewable Awarding Organisation.

  3. Unless you plan to solely work for Octopus Energy customers, obtain MCS certification or join an MCS umbrella scheme. To become MCS certified you will need to prove competency and have robust Quality Management Systems (QMS) in place.
