PAT testing, or Portable Appliance Testing, is not a legal requirement in the UK. However, it is strongly recommended by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) as a way to prevent electrical hazards in the workplace. Regulations such as the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require employers to maintain electrical equipment in a safe condition, and PAT testing is one way to achieve this.

PAT testing can be carried out by individuals who are competent and have the necessary knowledge and skills. We recommend that individuals who perform PAT testing should have received appropriate training to ensure they can accurately assess and test electrical equipment. This training includes courses and certification in PAT testing procedures.

PAT test results don't have a specific expiration date. The safety of electrical equipment can change over time so regular retesting is essential. The interval between tests should be determined by a risk assessment and the guidelines set for different types of equipment.
