Energy Efficiency Course Information

GTEC’s Energy Efficiency (Part L) course delivers the knowledge, skills and competency required to design gas or oil-fired domestic heating systems in accordance with Part L of the Building Regulations. 

Part L of the building regulations sets out energy efficiency standards that promote low-carbon building practices and sustainable construction. 

Training is classroom-based. Our expert trainers will help you learn in an informal and engaging environment. There will be an online e-assessment at the end of the day. 

On completion of this course, candidates will receive an LCL Awards Level 3 Certificate in Energy Efficiency for Gas Fired and Oil-Fired Domestic Heating and Hot Water Systems, which is recognised by building services industry Competent Persons Schemes (CPS).

There are no pre-requisites for this course, however, it is aimed at those who are working in the building services industry as heating installers and/or design engineers. 

This course is a pre-requisite for our Biomass Training Course and Solar Thermal Training Course.

Successful candidates will receive their LCL Awards certificate approximately four to six weeks following completion of the course.

An energy efficiency rating is a measure used to indicate the energy efficiency of a product or system. These ratings are typically provided by manufacturers or regulatory bodies and help consumers make informed decisions about the energy consumption and performance of appliances, equipment or buildings.

For example, home appliances like refrigerators, air conditioners and washing machines often come with energy efficiency labels that rate their energy consumption. These labels may use various scales or letters (e.g., A+++ to D, ENERGY STAR) to indicate the level of energy efficiency, with "A" or the highest rating indicating the most energy-efficient products.

The Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) is a measure of how efficiently an air conditioning system or heat pump converts electrical energy into cooling or heating output. It is typically used to evaluate the energy efficiency of cooling systems. 

The formula for calculating EER is:

EER = Cooling Capacity (in British Thermal Units, BTUs) / Power Input (in watts)

A higher EER indicates that the cooling system provides more cooling output for each unit of electrical energy it consumes, making it more energy-efficient.

Part L of the Building Regulations refers to the section of building regulations that focuses on the conservation of fuel and power in buildings. These regulations are aimed at improving the energy efficiency of new and existing buildings and reducing their carbon emissions. 

Part L has been updated several times to align with evolving energy efficiency standards and sustainability goals.
