Battery Storage Course Information

This  Level 3 Battery Storage training course covers the installation of dedicated EESS in accordance with the IET code of Practice for Electrical Energy Storage Systems. It provides detailed theoretical and practical knowledge enabling candidates to apply the relevant regulations and guidance and safely work on battery storage systems.

During the course, you will receive practical training, including work on:

  • Purpose-built battery storage rigs; and
  • Live equipment within a fully functioning plant room.

You will also cover theory relating to health & safety, industry regulations and best-practice.

At the end of the course, candidates will undertake a practical, observed assignment and an online/theory component.

On completion of this course, you will receive an LCL Awards Level 3 Certificate, which is recognised by the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS)

Research and development in recent years means that battery technology has greatly improved leading to wider use in residential settings. When combined with domestic microgeneration, such as solar photovoltaics (pv), electrical energy storage systems (EESS) enable customers to store the energy they generate, making use of off-peak rates and smart tariffs to save on electricity bills and reduce reliance on fluctuating grid prices.

Battery storage systems work by storing excess electricity generated from sources like solar panels or the grid. Battery storage systems allow end users to consume more of the power they generate from renewable sources, and/or store energy when it is cheapest, further enhancing energy bill reductions.

When needed, the stored energy can be discharged to power homes, businesses, or other electrical loads.

The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Code of Practice for Electrical Energy Storage Systems provides guidelines and recommendations for the design, installation, and operation of energy storage systems, including battery storage. This code of practice helps ensure the safe and efficient deployment of EESS, covering aspects like safety, maintenance, and compliance with regulations. It is a valuable resource for professionals involved in energy storage projects.

The lifespan of solar storage batteries varies depending on factors like battery chemistry, usage patterns and maintenance. Common battery types used in solar storage, such as lithium-ion, typically last between 10 to 20 years. Regular maintenance and proper charging/discharging practices can extend a battery's lifespan.
