Battery Storage Course Information

This Level 3 course covers installing dedicated EESS by the IET Code of Practice for Electrical Energy Storage Systems. Candidates gain the necessary knowledge to apply relevant regulations and guidance allowing them to work safely on battery storage systems.

During the course, you will receive practical training, including work on:

  • Purpose-built battery storage rigs; and
  • Live equipment within a fully functioning plant room.

You will also cover theory relating to health & safety, industry regulations and best practices.

At the end of the course, candidates will undertake a practical, observed assignment and an online/theory component.

Upon completing the course, you receive an LCL Awards Level 3 Certificate. This is a qualification the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) recognises.

Candidates must have an up-to-date copy of the IET Code of Practice for Electrical Energy Storage Systems. We can provide you with one at the time of booking or you can purchase it by calling our office following your booking.

In addition to the above, candidates will need to bring the following books:

  • BS 7671 18th Edition
  • IET Guidance Note 3
  • IET Onsite Guide

All other course materials are provided.

In recent years, battery technology has greatly improved thanks to advanced research and development. As a result, this technology is now more widespread in residential settings. Combining domestic microgeneration like solar PV and electrical energy storage systems (EES) allows customers to store the energy they generate. Therefore, they can make use of off-peak rates and smart tariffs, saving on electricity bills and reducing reliance on fluctuating grid prices.

Battery storage systems work by storing excess electricity generated from sources like solar panels or the grid. They allow end users to consume power they generate from renewable sources, and/or store it when it is cheapest. Therefore, further reducing energy bills. When needed, the battery discharges its energy to power homes, businesses, or other electrical loads.

The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Code of Practice for Electrical Energy Storage Systems provides guidelines and recommendations for designing, installing, and operating all energy storage systems, including battery storage. This code of practice ensures the safe and efficient deployment of EES. It covers aspects like safety, maintenance, and compliance with regulations. Making it a valuable resource for professionals involved in energy storage projects.

The lifespan of solar storage batteries varies depending on factors like battery chemistry, usage patterns and maintenance. Common battery types used in solar storage, such as lithium-ion, typically last between 10 to 20 years. Regular maintenance and proper charging/discharging practices can extend a battery's lifespan.
