The market for ground source heat pumps (GSHPs) is expanding as more homeowners, businesses, and governments recognise their potential in terms of energy efficiency and sustainability.

Skilled heat pump installers with expertise in GSHP technology can position themselves at the forefront of this growing market. Allowing them to capitalise on the increasing demand for renewable heating solutions.

A Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) works by using the relatively stable temperature of the earth to heat or cool buildings. Consisting of a ground loop (buried pipes), a heat pump unit, and a distribution system, the GSHP extracts heat from the earth and compresses it using refrigerant. It then releases the heat into the building's heating system, where it warms water used for central heating and hot water.

During cooling, the process is reversed, with heat being removed from the building and transferred into the ground.

The choice between air and ground source heat pumps depends on various factors, including location, budget and specific heating needs. Both systems have their advantages: air source heat pumps are generally easier and cheaper to install, working for the majority of UK properties, while ground source heat pumps tend to be more efficient and suitable for larger applications - big houses or commercial sites.

The depth of the ground loop for a Ground Source Heat Pump system varies depending on factors like soil conditions and the system's heating or cooling capacity. In residential systems, loops are buried at depths of 1.5 to 2 metres. However, larger systems or those with specific requirements may have deeper loops.
