A domestic electrical installer is not necessarily a fully qualified electrician, they are someone who can self-certify under Part P of the Building Regulations, which covers electrical installations in domestic environments. In order to self-certify works, a domestic electrical installer will be registered with a Competent Persons Scheme (CPS). They could be a bathroom fitter installing a shower, or a heating engineer wiring in a boiler.

You do not have to complete typical electrician training (apprenticeship etc.) to become a domestic electrical installer, but to join a CPS you must prove competency in electrical safety, including knowledge of the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations, Initial Verification, Periodic Inspection and Safe Isolation, for example. The average salary for an electrical installer in the UK is £35,000 per year - this could be an electrician or a tradesperson that carries out domestic electrical work as part of their role. 

Salaries vary depending on experience, location and the type of employer. For example, electrical installers who work for themselves tend to earn more than those who are employed.

Domestic electrical installers can install and maintain electrical systems in homes and other domestic properties. This includes a wide range of tasks, such as:

• Installing new electrical wiring and circuits
• Repairing and replacing electrical wiring and circuits
• Installing and maintaining light fittings and sockets
• Installing and maintaining electrical appliances
• Installing and maintaining consumer units (fuse boxes)
• Installing and maintaining electrical safety devices, such as circuit breakers and RCDs

Domestic electrical installers also need to be able to read and interpret electrical drawings and diagrams, and they need to be familiar with the latest electrical regulations.
